Using ReCharge Subscription App with Outdated Shopify Themes

Recharge & Shopify

So, you have an outdated Shopify Theme?

It’s not the end of the world, it just means you’ve been in the e-commerce world longer than most! As with any piece of technology, it’s going to develop some technical debt during its life cycle. The ease of setting up your Shopify store might have been a bit deceptive and it requires maintenance just like a car or house would.

ReCharge subscription app and Shopify theme compatibility

You might find yourself running a successful store for a few years now, and want to leverage a Shopify Subscription app, like ReCharge, to increase your Average Order Value (AOV) and Lifetime Value (LTV). But you quickly learn that your old Shopify theme is either incompatible entirely, or only works with the legacy version of ReCharge. If you’re lucky, you’ll be in the legacy compatible group, and eligible for subscriptions after all. The only downside is that the theme limits the scope of what the app can do for your store. You’ll still be able to generate and manage subscriptions, with a few limitations:

  • Your customers will be forced to a secondary checkout portal to complete the transaction

  • They will not be allowed to have a mixed cart (subscription items + one-time purchases)

Customer Flow for Legacy ReCharge Checkout

Look overly complicated? The new ReCharge process eliminates external checkout and simply processes through Shopify’s default checkout mechanism (via some handy-dandy new APIs).

In order to utilize the newest version of ReCharge (as of late November 2020) which integrates directly with Shopify’s Subscription APIs and allows your customers to checkout with the standard flow on your site (without a redirect to a separate portal), you’ll need to have one of the following themes:

According to a recent email from ReCharge (December 2021), they will be offering assistance in migrating any clients on the old platform to the new Shopify checkout integration.

ReCharge will be offering a white glove migration service on a first-come, first-served basis for a limited number of merchants who get into the conversion queue ASAP. Merchants can expect the conversion process to last between 1-3 weeks depending on the payment gateway.
